Description	NASAs Space Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise is shown mated atop its 747 carrier jet during the first captive test flight of the Orbiter February 18, 1977 over the Mojave Desert of Southern California. During the test flight the mated aircraft/Orbiter climbed to an altitude of 4875 meters (16,000 feet) to determine performance and handling characteristics. Six unmanned captive flights will be followed by a series of manned captive tests before the Orbiter begins its free flight test glides to the landing runways at Edwards Air Force Base. The Space Shuttle Orbiter will be launched into space from Kennedy Space Center, Florida in spring 1979.
