The park was named for Major Robert Kirkwood, a revolutionary hero in the southern campaign of 1780-1783. Later he enlisted in the army and was commissioned as a captain in 1791. He was killed in battle near Fort Recovery and considered a hero.
The land and farm was owned by the Jacquet family, whose family settled here from the Netherlands. Major Peter Jacquet was an officer in the Delaware Line during the Revolution. The farm was located about a mile below Wilmington on Route 13.
