Scope and Content

The papers of Paul Arthur are comprised of material collected by Dr. Arthur’s sister, Dorothy Arthur from 1967 through the 1988. The Collection is divided into two series. The first contains press releases from the DuPont Company and includes photographs of Dr. Arthur and the process associated with Crolyn as demonstrated in 1967. A small folder of promotional literature from DuPont is also included here. The second series is comprised of clippings related to Crolyn from 1967 through 1988. Also included in this series is a folder of undated material. Both series in the collection are arranged chronologically.

Historical Note

Dr. Paul Arthur (June 20, 1915 – January 13, 2000), graduate of M.I.T and later research chemist with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, was the inventor of Crolyn, a type of magnetic tape used in sound and video recording. The product was the result of a great deal of research using magnetic materials and magnetism. The new tape, containing chromium dioxide, provided an improvement in both output and resolution over the earlier iron dioxide tapes. The technology was sold in 1975 to a firm in the Soviet Union.
